The Separation

I can still remember

my head on your chest
before we fall asleep
listening to the beat.
i can hear it,
feel it,
if i strain
even now.
i knew each

precious,
and felt even my head
might be too heavy for you.
but i listened and lay there
til I was half asleep
rolling over to my own empty space
letting you roll over to yours.
